Tale of rent boy’s desperate fight to survive — and find love — is sometimes tough to watch but well worth the effort

Félix Maritaud, Eric Bernard, Nicolas Dibla, Phillippe Ohrel

As you’ll see from the rest of this page, it’s a remarkable month for queer cinema releases — and that’s before the fabulous BFI Flare fest hits London at the end of March (see p116). But this tiny French stunner hits the hardest of them all. An unshakeable, uncompromising character study of a rent boy on the brink of collapse — physically and emotionally — this no-holds-barred directorial debut from Camille Vidal-Naquet shows a view of gay sexuality rarely shared on screen, without judgment or sensationalism. Seen on the fringes of 120 BPM last year, Félix Maritaud is an electric discovery as the near-feral 22-year-old Leo, doing whatever it takes to survive while seeking any form of true intimacy, and finding conflicted kinship with his fellow wild boys. It’s sometimes upsetting, sometimes fiercely funny, but always wears its queer gaze with pride. 1 March
