Spain’s capital hosts one of the world’s largest Pride events every July — but the city has plenty to entertain LGBT+ travellers at any time of year

If you’re looking for the most gay friendly capital city in Europe, look no further than Madrid. With 3.5 million people attending the city’s World Pride in 2017, it takes the top spot for the most attended LGBT+ event, plus it is home to half a million LGBT+ citizens (about 15 per cent of the population). On top of that, it has more than 200 LGBT-specific venues.

Indeed, as a whole, Spain has been a progressive country for gay people since the 1990s, when it brought in anti-discrimination and hate crime laws, and in 2005 it became the fourth country (one day after Canada) to offer full marriage equality. Not bad for a country that was ruled by a fascist dictatorship until 1975.

Beyond its rainbow credentials, Madrid boasts art galleries and museums that give it hefty cultural clout, an innovative culinary scene for foodie types and a nightlife that goes on well beyond dawn. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the madrileños are easy on the eye…
