Somebody should give this woman a shampooendorsement deal. This is the first thought that pops into my head when Jess Glynne struts into a photographic studio in North London, her spectacularly wild mane of flame-coloured hair in full swing. Oozing confidence, she takes her position for a fittingly fierce shoot.

So, I am a little surprised to learn a few hours later, when the camera has stopped snapping, and the wind machine has died down, that one of the country’s most successful singers only recently managed to unfurl herself from a cat’s cradle of anxiety that grew increasingly tangled as she became a household name.
