LATE NIGHT BAD BOY

Andy Cohen has a tendency to get slapped by famous women. His job can be a bit unpredictable like that. Watch What Happens Live — filmed live five nights a week — is one of America’s most-talked-about chat shows, and its host has made a name for himself by asking questions other talk show hosts don’t dare. Among the celebrity confessions aired on the show are Gwyneth Paltrow admitting to having taken ecstasy, Cameron Diaz’s admission to having had a same-sex sexual encounter, and Susan Sarandon revealing she arrives stoned at almost every award ceremony she attends — apart from the Oscars, that is.

“There are too many to count,” he says, reflecting on his personal highlights from the 10 years the show has been running. “But getting slapped by Cher, slapped by Oprah. Meryl Streep. Lady Gaga gave me a make-up tutorial. All the big divas, that’s the most exciting for me.

“When John Mayer surprised me and hosted my 50th birthday show, that was amazing.” I’m sitting opposite one of America’s most audacious presenters on a large sofa in his two-floor apartment in New York’s West Village. The decor is warm and homely, with touches of Seventies detailing. His office desk upstairs is a pile of papers and magazines. There’s a casualness to his home that echoes Andy’s informal presenting style and belies his massive TV personality status. Away from his nightly show, Andy’s career high is as executive producer for the Real Housewives series.

Holding his attention is a challenge in itself, I don’t know how Andy sits so still on TV. He jumps up and heads to the jar of jelly beans by the retro-looking bar in the corner of the room and grabs a handful. Apparently, Sarah Jessica Parker has had her hands in that bowl.
