TGR UPPER DERWENT VALLEY LINE
During its first decade of operation the Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR) 1067mm gauge line between Westerway and Fitzgerald had more than its fair share of runaways and derailments. This was due to a combination of leaving wagons on the running line for loading timber, the almost continuous downgrade and the enthusiasm displayed by some local residents for trying to wreck trains. The Derwent Valley line had been gradually extended up the Derwent and Tyenna Valleys from its junction with the main line at Bridgewater, twenty one km north of Hobart.
