CALLING AT MORTDALE
Reminiscing about his time as a call boy, Mark Aylott ended up at Mortdale Car Sidings in 1979-80, it was the time of the opening of the Eastern Suburbs Railway and the end of the ‘red rattlers’ on the Illawarra line.
KEEPING THE HOME FIRES BURNING: SYDNEY FIREWOOD TRAFFIC
It is hard to imagine that in 1878 firewood was the largest single commodity consigned to the Sydney metropolitan area, on the southern and western lines, for home cooking, heating, bread making and any pursuit that required heat (except for those who burned coal).
