Australian Railway History  |  December 2020
This year the team and I have discussed numerous times how 1970 – 50 years ago – seemed to be a massive year of changes for railways all over Australia. So, when Frank Johnson surprised us with this month’s article, we naturally thought it suitable for the December edition to finish Volume 71 on a high. As you will read, a number of NSW train services were still worked by steam, but the end was in sight with new modern power taking over. All photos shown are in 1970 unless written. We would like to wish you all a safe and healthy Christmas and thank you for all your contributions and readership throughout 2020.
The December 2020 Edition includes:
• The New South Wales Railways: 1970 – 2020, 50 Years of Change
• NSW Exports in 1970 Pictorial
• BOOK REVIEW: Tasmanian Railways 1950-2000
• Letters
Cover: Replacing the normal two-car diesel set, a pristine 3813 approaches Narara with No 49x passenger on 1 December, during the Papal visit of Pope Paul VI to Sydney. ARHS Archives 543026
