Faces of change

Meet the activists shaping the world as we know it

What does teenage environmentalist, Greta Thunberg, have in common with Leonardo DiCaprio? It’s the same parallels that can be drawn between documentary-maker Stacey Dooley and Tesco’s plant-based innovator, Derek Sarno. The answer doesn’t lie in the punchline of a bad joke – rather the opposite. It’s their ability to incite change. While their own individual ambitions to help the planet in various ways differ – from animal rights, feminism, environmental issues, and veganism – they’re all united by their dazzling knack to inspire others. We’ve put together 10 people who have made significant impacts on society in the last year, with our youngest activist aged just 12, right the way to our oldest at 93, and we want their powerful social action to motivate you. If they can do it, why can’t we? Even by having this very magazine in your hand, you have already started to think about the small changes you can make to create a better planet for everyone. After all, what better way to make a difference than being the change you want to see in the world?

About Be Kind

Hello, Looking back over 2019, if there is one person who has made their presence and message known, it’s Greta Thunberg. The passionate girl who skipped school to protest climate change has seen unprecedented media attention and created a movement bigger than anyone could have expected. At the tender age of 16 years old, she has achieved more than most will in their lifetimes. But she’s not the only one standing up for what they believe in and creating positive change. This issue we have rounded up some of our heroes of the past year, from Leonardo DiCaprio to Genesis Butler, and we are so grateful to these people for using their platforms for good. But it isn’t just the big names that need celebrating. Since the start of Be Kind, we have given the spotlight to the smaller, but no less significant, names doing their bit to improve the planet and the lives of those on it. We have met some truly wonderful, selfless people who work tirelessly to create a better world. So, to all the brilliant beings setting up and running zero-waste shops, to the soup kitchens making sure homeless people receive a hot meal, to the lift sharers, the litter pickers, the plastic-free period campaigners, the animal lovers, the bee protectors, the food-waste fighters, the cruelty-free cosmetic brands, and all those trying to put a smile on the faces of those having a rough time, we thank you. The time you give up, the things you do and the messages you share make a real difference. And kindness is catching, so let’s keep spreading joy into 2020. Have a very merry Christmas, Phillipa Editor
