Trouble Shooting

Workshop l Adjust Your Gears

OUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE WILL HAVE YOUR GEARS snapping happily from one cog to the next, but only if everything else is setup correctly without glitches or excessive wear. If you’re still having troubles, here are some of the more common issues that can compromise your shifting.

Cable friction is the most common cause of sluggish gear shifting. It makes the uptake lever harder to push and hampers the shift speed when changing to smaller cogs. If your bike has ‘old school’ external cables with slotted guides, you may be able to slide the outer casing back to give them a clean and lube. Fitting new cables is probably the best solution however, and don’t just replace the inner wire; make sure the outer housing is replaced as it’s typically the root of excessive cable friction. Also look out for any tight bends in the cable routing, as these can compromise the shifting performance.
