LTIMATE BOXXER returns this weekend for its third outing (see pages 28-29), pitting eight middleweight hopefuls against each other in the pursuit of the £16,000 star prize. When the competition first came along, with its 21st century bad spelling and a young team determined to take a chunk out of the burgeoning ‘casual’ market, the boxing hardcore – something of a territorial lot – almost unanimously turned their noses up at the concept.
‘So, it’s basically Prizefighter with unknown boxers,’ seemed to be the standard viewpoint of the eight-man, one-winner competition. And that’s exactly what it is, not so much a nod to the format of Prizefighter but a carbon copy; a one-night tournament of seven three-round fights that leaves one man standing at the end. Which should beg the question: What’s wrong with that?
