Matt Bozeat looks back on the night when unknown Breidis Prescott became the proverbial bull in a china shop and smashed Amir Khan in pieces

THE name Breidis Prescott means much to both Terence Crawford and Amir Khan. Crawford made his breakthrough when, at only a week’s notice, he beat the Colombian over 10 rounds on HBO back in May, 2013.

Prescott had made his name on a crazy night in Manchester four-and-a-half years earlier…

He hadn’t looked like he was about to shake up the world any time soon. Prescott sat in his changing room a couple of hours before the biggest fight of his life with his feet up on a chair and a happy-to-be-here smile on his face.

Prescott, you suspected, didn’t know what was coming. Khan, an Olympic silver medallist at 17 who had won all 18 pro fights and was ranked in the top 10 by the WBC, IBF and WBO and a big favourite.

But as it turned out, it was Khan didn’t know what was coming. It was a huge night for Khan – and promoter Frank Warren.

ITV failed to stump up the funds to keep Khan after screening his first 18 fights and Warren was reunited with Sky Sports. Interestingly, considering the current criticism of Box Office events, Khan-Prescott was a pay-per-view fight.
