THE first Olympic qualification event begins on Thursday (February 20). With the Asian Olympic Qualification Event being rescheduled for Jordan at the start of next month, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, the African region qualifier takes centre stage now. It will run in Dakar, Senegal from February 20-29 with the best boxers of the continent, 221 athletes from 39 nations, will be competing at the Dakar Arena for 33 Tokyo 2020 Olympic quota places. There will be three places at Tokyo 2020 up for grabs in each of the six men’s divisions from flyweight up to light-heavyweight and also in the women’s flyweight category. In male heavyweight and super-heavyweight, as well as female feather, lightweight, welter and middle there will just be two qualification places available in each of those divisions for the upcoming Games.
