You’d be doing pretty well to miss the doom and gloom Brexit stories rife in the media at the moment – whether it’s the threat of a no-deal apocalypse or the possibility of an exodus of skilled workers (trades included). But self builders are a resilient bunch, and it seems that our less-than-certain political and economic climate isn’t dissuading you from pursuing the bespoke home building project of your dreams – and why should it, especially if you’re going to live in your new property for years to come?
News from NaCSBA (the National Custom and Self Build Association) suggests that an extra 10,000 people have signed up to the Right to Build in the last 12 months. Log on to www.self-build.co.uk/right-build for a guide to how the initiative can help unlock more plots, and see Mike Hardwick’s report on page 11 for more on the latest figures. On top of that, the recent Build It Live South East show was packed with visitors, plans-in-hand, seeking the best solutions for their projects. And I’ve just heard that PlotSearch, BuildStore’s land-finding service, has seen over 1,000 new subscribers sign up in January – many of them in the 26-40 age bracket, which suggests that more and more of us are seeing self build as a potential route onto the housing ladder.
