Bespoke staircase…

Stacked flight

Nothing in Glenys and Paul’s Victorian house is square, so the measurements for the bespoke staircase had to be accurate to the millimetre. “The challenges were huge”, says Glenys. “There are two sets of stairs above one another, but with diff erent widths at various points in each set. We had to make sure there was 2m of head room at all stages, so the height and number of treads had to be accurate. Paul measured the whole lot four times before we submitted our calculations. It was like a 3D puzzle.” The builders were still working on site at the time and the Fergusons asked them to rework the clearance over the stairs leading to the first floor to meet the correct dimensions. They chose glass sides for the stairs to maximise light flow in the hallway.
