Welcome

We’ve got some pretty incredible news this month. In what I’m fairly certain must be a magazine first, we’re building a real-life project! Build It’s Self Build Education House will give you the chance to understand the processes and decisions that go into a home building scheme, learn about the products we’ve chosen (and see them in action) and understand the implications of taking different routes or changing the specification levels. We’ll be following the project every step of the way in print (see page 62 for the first instalment) and online at www.buildit.co.uk/ourhouse.

As usual, this edition is packed full of inspiration and advice. Head over to page 22 to discover how the owners of our cover house, the Wilmots, secured planning consent for their dream timber frame home on a characterful garden plot. This kind of structure can lend itself to lightweight claddings; for an in-depth look at how to pair them effectively, turn to page 75. For more practical design guides, check out architect Julian Owen’s top tips on how to plan the perfect kitchen (page 94), Charley Ward’s pick of the best modern radiators (page 72), and Rebecca Foster’s advice on choosing roof tiles for renovations (page 88).
