WE’RE RINGING THE changes a bit in
Cage & Aviary Birds at the moment, and I
hope you approve of the results. The aim
is to bring you a wider variety of articles
every week, to try and make sure that
fanciers of most interests are catered for.
In this issue, it’s a pleasure to welcome a most
interesting and eloquent birdman to our pages: Donald
Roles. Donald, though long resident in the USA, originally
hails from this island, but after training at Jersey Zoo under
the aegis of the great Gerald Durrell, he forged a career as
a curator in some of the world’s great zoos.
I always enjoy tracing Durrell’s influence within the
avicultural world, and am looking forward to Donald’s
developing story. You’ll find the first instalment on page 14.
A more
familiar name to
many readers
will be Graham
Lee (see page
13), that highly
respected
specialist in
parrot-finches
and other tropical seedeaters. I’m delighted to say Graham
will be sharing his practical expertise with us from time to
time – welcome, Graham! From the opposite end of
England, Gloster canary great Norman Wallace brings us
his “Talk of the Tyne” (page 12), a regular commentary on
birdkeeping goings-on – not only Gloster canary ones – in
counties Durham and Northumberland.
Turning to the south and west, I spy some fanciers in
South Wales who have been lucky enough to receive a visit
from that colourful duo Dave Brown and Chris Green,
zebra finch specialists (it says here) but enthusiasts for
more or less anything with feathers. Their “On the Road”
offering is on page 17. And over in the rain-lashed West
Country, Clive Wakeman reports on
the start of a new project to build the
aviary of his dreams (page 14). Apart
from that, it’s business as usual! Have a
great week.

Cage & Aviary Birds is the world’s only weekly newspaper for birdkeepers. Written by bird experts for bird fans, it is packed with news, advice and comment from the avicultural scene. An essential resource for members of bird clubs and societies, it also offers an unrivalled marketplace for sellers and buyers of birds and all bird-related products, both in the British Isles and around the world.
As a weekly, it’s a uniquely comprehensive and topical source of news on all subjects that affect the birdkeeper: from legal changes and government consultations, through zoo and bird-park events, scientific research and business news, to the achievements of personalities in the hobby, as well as clubs and their members.
While it’s first and foremost a newspaper, each issue also offers a wealth of practical advice and tips from the top names in the bird world, plus opinion, controversy, species and hobbyist profiles, humour and nostalgia. Bargain-hunters eagerly await their copy to scan its paid and free adverts, and it is quite simply The Bible for show reports, club news and events.
Since 1902, Cage & Aviary Birds has consistently been the first-choice publication for keen birdkeepers, whether experienced or new to the hobby.
