ISLAY and Jura’s school pupils joined in with the international remembrance of islanders’ heroic and inspiring actions during the First World War. In the lead up to the centenary of the sinking of the SS Tuscania and the HMS Otranto, where more than 700 servicemen were killed, pupils from Islay High School and all of Islay and Jura’s primary schools worked on a joint project as part of the ‘WW100 Islay’ commemorations. During the sinking of the two boats, the people of Islay came together to retrieve the dead and injured from the sea, care for the survivors and respectfully bury the dead.
