Harpoon hunters speared sharks


FISHERMEN in the mould of Jaws anti-hero Quint once earned mega bucks in Carradale.

Village character ‘Neenie’ MacDougall has spotted a photograph on the wall of the Ashbank hotel. It shows his father operating a harpoon gun on the stern of a boat with a shark’s fin in the background.

Mr MacDougall said that a shark processing factory, at Port Na Cuile, opened in the village in the 1940s to produce oil for Tilley lamps.
