AS GAMERS, we aren’t exactly under-served by zombie games. But there’s no argument about the genre’s defining franchise: Resident Evil. Since the first Resi game arrived in 1996 and instantly became one of the original PlayStation’s definitive titles, Capcom has grown and nurtured the series so cleverly that it is just as popular today.
1999’s Resident Evil 3, arguably, was the game that really set the foundations for Resi games as we know them today. It was the first Resi game to escape from claustrophobic interiors and give a wider sense of the chaos which ensued when the T-Virus outbreak (suddenly relevant once more with the real-world Coronavirus threatening to become a pandemic) hit the fictional Raccoon City. So, in the general canon of zombie games, Resident Evil 3’s influential nature cannot be overstated. For fans of zombie games, the fact that Capcom has been diligently treating it to the sort of loving, modern-technology remake which saw last year’s Resident Evil 2 Remake feature on several Game of the Year lists is exciting. Ahead of Resident Evil 3 Remake’s April 3 release, we managed to get hands-on experience of it, along with an all-new multiplayer game with which it will be bundled, Resident Evil Resistance.
