Classic Car Buyer  |  No.229 New British Car Museum?
They say that the two things
most capable of spearing
directly into the nostalgia
centre of your brain are music and
smells. I would agree with that;
surely we’ve all got at least one song
or composition where within the first
few bars we’re transported back to a
particular time and place?
I experienced a rather intense
nostalgia trip this week while
driving, of all things, our beige 1983
Vauxhall Carlton estate. After a long
absence this has been patched
up and returned to service and I
was driving out into Norfolk for an
upcoming CCB feature.
While I have no direct personal
connection with a Vauxhall Carlton,
’Eighties estate cars hit a lot of
my nostalgia buttons. It was a
hot day and, since the Carlton’s
radio doesn’t work, the only music
available, beyond that which I
was singing to myself, were two
cassettes left over from its European
road trip nearly two years ago: The
Best of Dusty Springfield (good) and
The Best of Donna Summer (not so
good).
