In a world where so much is either virtual or downright fakery, it’s refreshing to come across
something genuine, especially when it’s connected to old cars too. As you can read in this month’s news pages, we recently had the opportunity to attend the ‘reveal’ of one of the cars restored by the popular Car SOS TV show for its unsuspecting owner and can report that the stunned surprise of said owner was every bit the real thing. As is the enthusiasm of presenter Fuzz for the hands-on aspect of restoring the cars themselves. The rush you see on screen is genuine too, since the team usually has just three weeks to perform what is often extensive restoration work. And we thought putting a magazine together every four weeks was hard work... You’ll have to wait until next year to see the episode concerned but keep your eyes peeled and you’ll spot me loitering in the background trying to look like Joe Public while lecturing some of the production crew with obscure facts about the exhibits. Yes, as expected just like magazine photo shoots the glamour of TV work is tempered with an awful lot of standing around. The unveiling took place at the Haynes Motor Museum near Yeovil in Somerset and although I’ve visited the museum regularly over the years since its very earliest days I hadn’t been for some time. The collection is an impressive one with some really unusual exhibits and with the £4.2m expansion currently taking place it’s set to improve further. Combine a visit to the museum with a trip to see Concorde at the excellent Fleet Air Arm museum just down the road at Yeovilton and you’ve got a superb day or weekend out for anyone who loves old machinery.
