JOSS COPE
INDEFINITE PARTICLES
GARE DU NORD
★★★
Joss Cope’s career has been overshadowed by brother Julian – though, to be fair, he quit music in the 90s to campaign for Greenpeace – but his second solo album’s a whimsical affair that sometimes recalls Stephen Duffy, whose voice his resembles. Naturally, there are echoes of Cope Jr’s late 80s band, Something Pretty Beautiful, not least in Hit The Wall, and – genes being what they are – of Cope Sr in Lifeboat Service’s melody. Additionally, his 60s psych influences are pronounced: on Healed he sounds like a chipper Syd Barrett.
