THIN IS IN

GLOCK’S LATEST, THE G48 AND G43X, SHOW THAT SLIM DESIGNS AREN’T LIMITED TO POCKET PISTOLS
The new Glock 48 (left) and Glock 43X should appeal to those who prefer a thinner grip frame than was offered with the company’s double-stack compact 9mm pistols. Glock photo

One criticism of Glock pistols in the past was that their grip frames were rather blocky. The company responded over the years with skinny pocket pistols, namely the G42 and G43. Now the company has expanded its slimline offerings with the larger G48 and G43X, both in 9mm.

FAMILIAR GUNS

I’ve fired most Glock models in various calibers since its introduction in 1982. I may have fired one in Europe before it was imported into the U.S. I’m not sure. I know that I fired one of the first Glock 17s imported, as a law enforcement agency with which I was involved had brought some in before there was an importer.

At one point when there was the scare about “plastic pistols” that could defeat metal detectors, a friend and I worked with a local Deputy U.S. Marshal at the Federal courthouse after hours to see if, indeed, Glocks could get through the metal detector without setting it off. They couldn’t.

I carried a Glock 19 for a couple of years and found it offered an effective tradeoff between light weight, reliability and magazine capacity. A few years ago, I decided I didn’t need a large stable of Glocks and sold or traded mine in .40 S&W, .357 SIG, 10mm, and .45 ACP. To allow me to stay familiar with the three that I was most likely to encounter in the U.S. or abroad, I kept a Glock 17, Glock 19, and Glock 26.
