Dear Cottage Life

The day before we left for our vacation in Mexico, your Winter ’17/’18 issue arrived. I took it with me, and my surroundings created a real contrast to “How Canadians Do Winter.” I kept my buns toasty on the beach while reading about frozen pipes, snowmobile spark plugs, and lumberjack lessons. —DAN LABROSSE, LAC BROME, QUE.

I was surprised that “The Big Bad” in Reporter (Waterfront, Spring ’18), implied that chickadees are bullies.

We have spent hours watching many species use our bird feeders. We see scissorbills, goldfinches, pileated and hairy woodpeckers, and blue jays, and by far the biggest bullies are the blue jays.

They will chase other birds away and attack them on the feeder. It also looks to me like they’re gluttons—gobbling bird feed until their crops are full and flying away to hide it, repeating the process until the feeder is empty. They are the only bird that I’ve seen behave this way.
