“With the folk revival in the early 60s we rediscovered blues and Appalachian music, I was hearing that for the first time. We saw how British bands repackaged and reinterpreted it in their style. John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters were a non-event in the US, but Philadelphia [Oates’ hometown] had a deep R&B connection, with radio stations and DJs and underground radio began there, too.
