Steve Earle + Guy Clark’s songs is a match made in heaven

Following on from Steve Earle’s tribute to his other key influence, Townes Van Zandt, this heartfelt collection of covers originally written by his mentor, the late, great Guy Clark, again fits like a glove. Recorded in Nashville in less than a week to sound live, you can sense how Earle picked up many of Clark’s tricks and techniques long ago, when he played bass in his band as a teenager. He adds crunching, buzzing feedback to Dublin Blues, one of Clark’s all-time classics, behind crisp pedal steel from Ricky Ray Jackson and Eleanor Whitmore’s pristine backing vocals. Whitmore plays fiddle throughout, and steps up to duet again on the stripped back Anyhow I Love You, and She Ain’t Going Nowhere, tinged with regret and longing.
