THE ONLY WAY AROUND IS THROUGH

It’s not a breakup album, but Sera Cahoone’s new album still delivers heartache and self-discovery.

MUSIC

KYLE JOHNSON

As evidenced by her new album, From Where I Started, singer-songwriter Sera Cahoone is intent upon carving out a place for herself in the world. She grew up in Littleton, Colo., playing drums in high school, before skipping out to Seattle when she was 21. There, she immersed herself in the artist’s life— working at a snowboard shop and a coffee house while finding her footing in the music scene. A stint in the indie rock band Carissa’s Wierd led to a run with Band of Horses, which led to a deal with Sub Pop Records, who released her first three solo albums: Sera Cahoone (2006), Only As the Day Is Long (2007), and Dear Creek Canyon (2012).
