DANZA&DANZA International  |  May/Jun
As the ten-year anniversary of Pina Bausch’s death approaches we’re prompted to reflect on the fate of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, which is divided between preserving the founder's repertoire and taking a new course. So we decided to talk to the new Artistic Director of the company Bettina Wagner-Bergelt and we asked the German critic Arnd Wesemann for a cultural-aesthetic reflection on the artist’s legacy.
We also travelled to meet Bruno Bouché, former dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet and Artistic Director of the Ballet de l'Opéra National du Rhin since 2017, to find out more about his second season in Alsace and hear his ideas on the future of a ballet company in the 21st century.
Our critics have toured Italy and the world to review the most important premieres such as the Rome Opera Ballet in “Serata Glass” by Bertaud/Robbins/Millepied and La Scala Ballet in the much awaited McGregor’s “Woolf Works”. We saw the debut of Wheeldon’s “Winter's Tale” with the Bolshoi Ballet and Maliphant’s “The Thread” at Sadler's Wells in London. We review two world premieres, the first by Felix Landerer and Bryan Arias at the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 in The Hague and the second Forsythe’s new piece “Playlist (Ep)” with the Boston Ballet in Paris.
We also report on the solemn ceremony that saw Jiri Kylián inaugurated to the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris and we take a flight to St. Petersburg to visit the ultra-modern Boris Eifman Dance Academy: 12,000 square meters of space and 14 dance studios with more than 300 students selected from all over Russia.
We round up this issue with shopping tips for dancers and an interview to find out about Capezio, one of the most famous brands in the world. It all started with Salvatore, a shoemaker from Southern Italy who emigrated to New York at the end of the nineteenth century.
