Ramona Andrews meets the gardeners who’ve put down roots in the capital – and discovers some unusual produce

TASTES LIKE HOME SPECIAL

When the place you’ve come to call home is the other side of the world from where you used to call home, food and flavours become a link to the past. A familiar taste of far away, but also a lifeline to new possibilities. Growing and sharing produce becomes one way to (literally) put down roots in a new environment.

Brent is one of the most ethnically diverse parts of London – 71 per cent of people living here come from an ethnic group other than White British.

Growers tend to cultivate the plants they know, so at Tenterden and other allotments like it around the UK, alongside familiar runner beans, courgettes and cabbages you’ll find Indian gourds, Afghan leeks, leafy grapevines and more.
