PROJECT LOOKS. MUSCLE. LONGEVITY

PART 12: BUILDING THE ALLISON TRANS

PHOTOS BY MERCHANT AUTOMOTIVE & JACOB WHITE

Project Looks. Muscle. Longevity returns once again. While some of you may be getting tired of seeing this truck, we know others have faithfully been following its transformation this past year from a stock “grandpa” truck with high mileage and a camper shell to the 600hp street stomper it is today. Originally, the plan was to show Duramax owners what the aftermarket had available for the 2011-2016 GM trucks to make them better fit each owner’s specific needs. Fine-tune that basic Silverado into the ultimate daily driver and weekend tow rig with plenty of horsepower and looks to go around. Of course, with the higher mileage (117K) when we took ownership of the truck, proper maintenance and improving longevity were also key.

In one of the first installments in this series, we’d done a basic fluid service to the factory Allison transmission with some new filters and fluid, along with the EPC Solenoid Fooler from Deviant Race Parts. The fooler is a simple way to increase line pressure within the trans for better holding power from the stock clutches. While that really helped the stock transmission hold some of the new power, we knew with the current mileage and torque this truck was making that the stock Allison wouldn’t live forever. So, before we found ourselves stranded on the side of the road or stuck in a dreaded limp mode with the 14,000-pound camp trailer in tow and screaming kids in the back seat, the factory six-speed was going to need some more help.
