The power and durability of a diesel engine are well understood when you grow up on a family farm. Throw a module on the tractor, combine or semi, and you can add power with no ill effects, cover the same ground much quicker and consume less fuel while doing it. But once the focus shifts to personal vehicles— diesel pickups, for instance—farm boys tend to lean on their engines even harder.

After he’d tripled the factory horsepower of his ‘08 Silverado (courtesy of 100-percent-over injectors, dual CP3s and compound turbos), Reece Main quickly encountered a problem many LMM Duramax owners face—a cracked piston. He had two choices: Start with a fresh engine and back things down a bit or go all out. Obviously, Reece chose the latter route.

Put together by Dermody Diesel in Murrayville, Illinois, the short-stroke, 390 ci Duramax in Reece Main’s ‘08 Silverado is pretty serious. The rotating assembly (balanced at Wagler Competition Products) entails a 3.75-inch-stroke Callies Ultra Billet crank, Wagler forged-steel rods, Ross Racing forged-aluminum, fly-cut, 16:1 compression pistons, Fluidampr and a Sun Coast zero-balance flex plate. Diesel Technology Source Dominator series heads flow 25 percent more air than stock and bolt to the O-ringed block by way of ARP Custom Age 625+ head studs. Things are topped off with a custom compound turbo arrangement that is pieced together with help from HSP Diesel.
