By the mid-’70s, every tractor company worth its salt was on the big tractor/four-wheel-drive bandwagon.

Allis-Chalmers (A-C) was there, but not with a unit built in its West Allis, Wisconsin, tractor factory. Instead, starting in 1972, it sold a rebadged Stieger Bearcat, which the company called the Model 440. Using a Cummins 555ci, 208 lywheel horsepower V8, it was a capable unit—whether wearing “Stieger green” or “A-C orange.” The 440 kept A-C in the game while the all-new 7000 and 8000 series tractors were being developed, and both lines were to include four-wheel-drive, articulated models. Internally, Allis-Chalmers called the 7000 series “The New Family.”
