We all know someone who’s pushed a completely stock engine to the brink of destruction, but what about doing it in a truck you daily drive, tow heavy with, and depend on day-in and day-out? That’s exactly what Coltyn Du Pre has been doing for the past few years with this LBZ-powered ‘06 Silverado. It all started after his hunt for a reliable tow-rig concluded with the bone-stock, 180,000-mile, classic-body Chevy. From the outset of ownership, Du Pre wanted to make solid power with his Duramax, but he never imagined the factory rotating assembly and stock head bolts would still be holding strong at 725 rwhp. Here’s what he did to make it happen.

Planning for Power & Durability

Like most diesel enthusiasts, Du Pre knows that making big power on a stock-bottom-end LBZ is a gamble, especially with the factory pistons being a notorious weak link, and the rods not far behind them. However, good friend and local shop owner, Kevin Dermody of Dermody Diesel, came up with a way to keep the 6.6L as reliable as possible. Peak boost and drive pressure would be kept low to reduce stress on the engine, while well-crafted ECM tuning would bring a tame, 700-plus-hp to the table.
