TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE BIG APPLE
JOANNA WHITEHEAD FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS
“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless,” said Simone de Beauvoir. And she wasn’t wrong. As one of the world’s most iconic cities, time simply doesn’t exist to explore every nook and cranny of this sprawling metropolis – not least because it’s continually evolving. But we figured it was worth a try…
The Big Apple boasts bragging rights for some of the best museums, food and entertainment in the world. As thrilling as this is, it can sometimes feel overwhelming knowing exactly where to begin. Queers of quality would do well to start in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.
JOANNA WHITEHEAD is a Yorkshire lass based in London.

Home to the legendary Stonewall Inn (thestonewallinnnyc.com) which, in 2019, marks 50 years since the eponymous riots, Greenwich Village has long been a home for queers, rebels and bohemians. As the epicentre of gay life in New York, this picturesque part of town is packed with history. Although there are multiple tours in the city offering insights into its colourful past, we were blown away by Christopher Street Tours (christopherstreettours.com), an LGBTQI walking tour around the Village.
