SO MUCH has been written about David Bowie since his passing early this year that it’s hard to know what more needs to be added. Yes, he made a huge contribution to pop music and especially the idea that you could be both a pop artist and bring in elements of pop art. Perhaps even more lasting a legacy is that Bowie showed a whole generation that being different was tantamount to being cool and groovy.

There are those in the LGBT community who feel Bowie made a huge impact as one of our true ch-ch-changers. Another side believes Bowie exploited the gay card for publicity. Announcing he was bisexual in the early ’70s and rolling around in the bathtub with Mick Jagger were great plays at making the mainstream media look out-of-touch and, yes, very uncool. Yet, Bowie later regretted having uttered that declaration and when asked much later on if he had ever been gay he evasively responded, “I was just happy”, further declaring himself a “closet heterosexual”.
