WILL YOUNG – SUMMER COVERS
While Will is considered a gay national treasure in his native UK, he’s never managed to achieve the acclaim he deserves outside his homeland. This latest release sees the former talent show winner tackle a handful of his favourite covers, hence the title of this EP. The songs selected are slightly obscure, less obvious choices like The Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love and Joni Mitchell’s hippy weepie Answer Me My Love. For our money, though, head over to YouTube to catch his version of Cyndi Lauper’s gay anthem True Colors, recorded during the Glastonbury festival. While we’re not a huge fan of his ’70s porn moustache (he lives in the London hipster region of Dalston), the recording is as moving and uplifting as you’d wish it to be of a queer classic from an openly gay man. PS: He’s still single and loves dogs!
