DESIGN
On his deathbed, Oscar Wilde famously said (though possibly didn’t), “This wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. Either it goes or I do.” The wallpaper had the last word but, like Oscar, we’re also obsessed with style and design, from the movie costumes of Edith Head to Alessi kitchenwear to the latest smart devices. And think of the gay legacy in fashion from Gaultier’s pointy bra to Bob Mackie’s full-body Cher fascinator. We’ve even been identified by our interiors: in Steel Magnolias Clairee asserts, “All gay men have track lighting”. Sure, there was a low point in the 2000s when gay became slang for lame and unfashionable but, since then, Queer Eye’s Bobby Berk has put us back in vogue where we belong. As Oscar said, “In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity, is the vital thing.”
