A History of Doctor Who in 100 Objects...

Nicholas Briggs: lord of the ring.

Every Doctor Who fan knows what a ring modulator is, right? It’s an electronic device in which a ring of diodes is excited by a bi-directional carrier signal which is typically a square wave whose Fourier expansion contains a series of reducing-amplitude odd harmonics which, when manipulated, can create a wide range of frequency modulations.

No, I have no idea what it means either. Interestingly though, it suddenly makes complete sense if you read it back again and imagine Peter Davison’s Doctor frantically delivering it in a breathless, panicky sort of way while simultaneously defusing a bomb.
