A TOWN CALLED MERCY

Director: Saul Metzstein Executive producers: Steven Moffat, Caroline Skinner Broadcast: 15 September 2012.

As Carry On Cowboy (1965) amusingly illustrated, the lack of suitable homegrown exteriors has always been a handicap to the credibility of any British-made presentation

The solution for the most successful entries in this unlikely Western sub-genre – Shalako (1968), Catlow (1971) and The Man Called Noon (1973) for example – was to follow the lead of their Italian-made Spaghetti Western counterparts and film on location in Almería in south-eastern Spain. Here the arid climate has created mainland Europe’s only desert, the Desierto de Tabernas, a barren landscape of sparse vegetation, dusty canyons and dried-up river beds that acceptably matches the badlands topography of the nineteenth century American Frontier.

About Doctor Who Magazine

In its early days, Doctor Who was recorded on cumbersome cameras tethered to claustrophobic and often inadequate studios. The show rarely escaped these confines in the 1960s, but as technology improved, producers and directors became more adventurous. Location shooting has helped to create some of the most memorable episodes in the series’ long history. In this unique publication, new features, exclusive interviews and rare images tell the story of those episodes and the people who made them happen.
