WITH ITS DEFENCES DOWN, THE TARDIS COLLIDES with a space-going replica of the Titanic, launched from the planet Sto in the Casivanian Belt. Promising its excited passengers the opportunity to explore primitive cultures, the Titanic has arrived over Earth for Christmas.

Materialising on board, the Doctor discovers that tourists and crew members on the first-class deck dress in the style, circa 1912, of the original Titanic. Among them is a spirited young waitress from Sto called Astrid Peth. The Doctor befriends Astrid; they are kindred spirts, as it was a desire to travel in space that brought her aboard the Titanic. The Doctor also meets Foon and Morvin Van Hoff (a couple who are on board thanks to winning a competition), Bannakaffalatta, a diminutive Sto cyborg, and Mr Copper, a historian with an uncertain grasp of Earth history. When Mr Copper takes a party of tourists to visit contemporary Earth, the Doctor grants Astrid’s wish to travel to another planet by smuggling her into the landing party, even though the crew are barred from such excursions.
