Hi Bas, how long have you been making miniatures? Well, if I also count the plastic models I made over the years, I’ve been building small since I was six. My first doll’s house was made for my daughter’s Barbie doll and was really large. After that it took some years before doll’s houses came into my life again. I made five for other families, which gave me the opportunity to start getting some building skills. At this point I knew that doll’s houses for adults existed, but I never heard of twelfth scale. This changed about 8 years ago when I did some work for a local doll’s house shop and found a way to express myself!
Where do you create? The first phase of creation happens in my mind. I can do that anywhere and at any time. It’s not unusual for me to get flashes of ideas during the day. The realisation of those visions are done in my 100ft square workspace. I live in a small house so it is in my attic.
Describe your workspace in five words. Packed, dusty, soothing, private, workable.
Do you listen to music while you work? I often connect the choice in music to the building I’m making. Soundtracks often work great. Harry Potter soundtrack when I build a witch house, barrel organ when I make a canal house, etc.
