MAKERS SHOW THEIR WORK AND TALK ABOUT THEIR MINI LIFE
We chat with Helle Kjaer Jerndal of Helles Miniatures and find out how her granddaughter inspired her to take up making beautiful birds in miniature
MINIS MADE WITH LOVE
Hi Helle, you’ve been making minis for more than 30 years. But how did you discover doll’s houses?
It all started when my youngest daughter wanted a Barbie house for her birthday and I decided to try to make it myself. I went to the library and found books on how to make miniature furniture. The project went well and my daughter was very pleased with her house.
And when did the birds begin?
About five years ago. This time it was my granddaughter who inspired me when we were playing with clay: “Granny, make a bird for me.”
Well, we’re delighted your granddaughter pointed you in the right direction.
Yes. I love birds and when I found out how to make them I just couldn’t stop. I’ve always liked to draw and paint people so then it came naturally to start sculpting dolls. Dolls and birds are my favourites, but I also make other pieces. I love to work with many different materials: clay, wood, fabrics, paper, resin, soapstone and feathers.
