this delightful doll’s house in a Victorian nursery is just one part of the great collection of things to see at the Worcestershire County Museum.
Sadly, as in many similar cases, there is little information about the house and I am asking for your help in trying to collect information about it for the museum. Do you know anything about the generous donor, when it was donated or can you can add any facts about the contents of the house? There are a lot of experts in Victorian houses in our hobby so, if you can help, please let us know. Any doll’s house detectives out there, now’s your chance to shine?
All the museum knows is that the house, about 40” wide, is believed to date from the 1850s or even earlier. As you can see, there are six rooms and many dolls, all of whom look Victorian to me. The wallpaper appears to be different in each room, and some of it even looks shiny — unusual for old houses or not? Some have stains which may mean at some stage in its life it was kept in damp conditions.
Apart from one red rug on the landing the carpets all look dusty and original, and I wonder if this one was added a little later. I should mention that this is the first time the house has been opened since it was acquired, and thanks must go to the Social History Curator for organising the photographs for me.
