You will need
My latest project, the boat house named On the Mon, will be featured in DHW soon, but first I wanted to share how I made the stone work. Follow along and have fun!
■ Foam board insulation
Step 1. You can purchase foam board insulation at any home improvement store. Consider how thick you would like your bricks to be when purchasing your board. Using packing Styrofoam for this is not recommended since it doesn’t cut cleanly.
■ Cutting mat
Step 2. If you purchase a large board (shown) first cut it into manageable pieces such as 12 x 12 inch squares. From there, measure out the size of your bricks using the ruler and scribing tool or pencil, whichever works best for you. For 1 inch scale bricks I used 20 x 10 x 5 mm measurements. I used a scribing tool to mark my measurements because it makes just enough of an indent to see.
■ Knife or hot wire cutting tool
Step 3. Using a knife or hot wire cutter, cut your bricks. Depending on what you are building, you can either be very precise or not. I wanted many variations as I was making a stacked stone look so I didn’t worry about being exact. This part is entirely up to you. Also, take a look at the thickness of your bricks. You may want to split them in half if your insulation board is a little thicker. The thickness will affect the visual of your final product.
