What one thing do you do better than anyone else you know?
I’ve had more extensive travels than most people. I was going to say make easy connections with movies of the ’70s, but I know [classic Hollywood podcast You Must Remember This host] Karina Longworth, who is much better than me. A lot of motherfuckers are trying to play that game with me, though, and I’m like, “Honey, calm down. The captain is here.” So I would say one of my favourite games is to correct people who think they know about the movies.
Which movie have you seen more times than any other?
The Long Goodbye is up there. I’ve seen that film an awful lot. Another movie that I always used to show my friends on acid as a teenager was Un Chien Andalou, with the slicing of the eyeball. I had a VHS copy that I probably watched a million times. Now, as an adult who’s closer to death than youth, [I can say] that that film for sure impacted me more radically across the board than many others. I see the nature of melting time all over Russian Doll. Then later I got into things that were more grounded. My love of Peter Falk sure comes from Columbo, but really from watching all those [John] Cassavetes films and Wings Of Desire. So I grew up watching things that would come to inform what kind of writer, director, actor, person I wanted to be.
