The European Union is under threat and it should respond by living up to its name, warns Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s chief Brexit negotiator.

Enemy within

Although he labels himself a political optimist, Verhofstadt sees Europe as a continent under attack.

“Europe is in bad shape. Brexit is just one element of this, but it’s much more than that,” Verhofstadt, who is also a former prime minister of Belgium, told a pan-European audience of fund selectors in Rome on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the founding Treaty of the European Community.
