IN BRIEF

Fawcett statue unveiled

A statue of the suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett has been unveiled in Parliament Square in London to mark 100 years since the first women got the vote.

The statue by Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing is the first monument of a woman to stand in the square. Tiled around the statue are 52 photographic etchings depicting 59 other women – and a few men – who were key in the fight for women’s suffrage. As part of centenary celebrations, a major free public exhibition, Voice and Vote, Women’s Place in Parliament, is also being staged in Westminster Hall from 27 June to 6 October 2018; find details at www.parliament.uk/get-involved/vote-100/voice-and-vote
