My family’s wartime plant nursery

Brenda Kearley, 95, relates the story of a memorable childhood to her daughter-in-law, Susie Kearley…

Brenda remembers growing up on a plant nursery, helping out with the planting, picking and sorting, and the horror of the bombs when the war came. ‘In the 1930s, we lived in a two-bed flat over a fishmongers and poultry shop in Eastbourne,’ says Brenda. ‘My parents owned the shop, as well as a hotel in the town. But Mum had ambitions to open a plant nursery – she’d spent her childhood living in the countryside with her parents, and wanted us to grow up enjoying the country lifestyle too. She also wanted us to inherit a thriving countryside business.’
