An author with aristocratic connections

Researcher Nick Thorne traces the author PG Wodehouse through the records by using the collections on TheGenealogist.co.uk

Most of us are familiar with the comic stories of the wise valet Jeeves and his cheery gentleman, Bertie Wooster. Some of us may also be familiar with the many other novels that PG Wodehouse published between 1915 and 1974. In researching the family of this

one-time reluctant banker, who escaped from the job he hated to become a writer of witty stories, we discover his connection to Norfolk aristocracy and more.

A surpise birth place

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born on 15 October 1881. A birth index record for him on TheGenealogist tells us that his arrival was reported to the local registrar in the Guildford area of Surrey. But this place of birth was more by accident than by planning. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography his birth in Surrey only occurred at this place because he was premature and his mother, Eleanor, had been on a visit to her sister in Guildford.
