THE ORIGINAL SUPERBIKE

25 YEARS OF THE FIREBLADE AT THE TT

The concept of Tadao Baba, the Honda CBR900RR–The Fireblade – started life as a 900cc sports bike in 1992 yet here we are some 25 years later with the model being arguably the most successful in history. Some have owned one, many have ridden one and a few have raced one and a quarter of a century on, Honda’s flagship has no plans to rest on its considerable laurels.

A BRIEF HISTORY

1992 – 1995 CBR900RR (893CC) SC28

The first generation CBR900RR was introduced in 1992 with an 893cc inline-four engine. It set a precedent for performance in the Superbike class as the bike was based on an advanced research stage model known within Honda as the CBR750RR.The objective was to outperform Honda’s rivals by increasing displacement and reducing weight. It was the start of a legacy which would last decades.

Minor gearbox changes came in 1994 but the second generation CB900RR, which debuted in 1995, incorporated changes in suspension as well as the introduction of more aluminium andmagnesium. The styling of the bike also became more aggressive with the front dual lights becoming irregular shaped multi-reflector lights known as Fox Eyes.

1996 – 1999 CBR919RR (919CC) SC33

1996 broughtmajor changes to the Fireblade with the third generation CBR900RR.To optimise rigidity, Honda revised the suspension and chassis as well as altering the swingarm pivot and ridingposition.A1mmbore increase raised the engine displacement to 918cc and other revisions included a smaller alternator, the addition of a throttle position sensor, extra clutch plates and a larger exhaust.
